Radiologic Associates of Fredericksburg (RAF) has a long history within the Fredericksburg medical community. Its history began in 1948 with the arrival of Dr. Christian Cimmino, the region’s first radiologist and RAF’s founder. Dr Cimmino practiced alone for 18 years until the arrival of his first partner Dr Donald Kenneweg in 1966.
Radiologic Associates of Fredericksburg was officially formed as an independent entity in 1974 with the purpose of providing radiologic services and interpretations for the hospital and community. In the beginning, X-rays were the primary imaging tool for diagnosis. As technology advanced, RAF physicians oversaw the introduction of many new imaging modalities including nuclear medicine, nuclear cardiology, ultrasound and echocardiography in the 1970′s, Computed Tomography, Magnetic Resonance Imaging, SPECT imaging in the 1980′s, and PET imaging at the turn of the century.
RAF has been at the forefront of outpatient imaging in the Rappahannock region.
A partnership of RAF and Mary Washington Health System opened the first outpatient center in Garrisonville in 1984, soon followed by the development of Medical Imaging of Fredericksburg in 1986. Currently, RAF manages additional outpatient facilities such as Medical Imaging at Lee’s Hill, the Imaging Center for Women and Medical Imaging of North Stafford.
Since Dr Kenneweg performed the area’s first arteriogram in 1967, RAF physicians have been leaders in providing Vascular and Interventional Radiologic services to the area. In 2007, RAF expanded by hiring two vascular surgeons to form Virginia Interventional and Vascular Asssociates (ViVa), now a wholly owned subsidiary of RAF. VIVA, located at the Lee’s Hill Professional Center, has brought many same day interventional procedures to the outpatient setting and provided a great convenience to patients.
Advancements in imaging over the past thirty years have transformed the practice of medicine. Keeping pace with these advances has taken RAF from a one man operation to a team of over 30 physicians composed of radiologists and vascular surgeons supported by 5 registered nurses and physicians assistants and a 6 member management team. Our radiologists include members with advanced fellowship training in Interventional Radiology, Neuroradiology, Nuclear Medicine, Body Imaging, Breast Imaging and Musculoskeletal Imaging. RAF currently provides radiology services to 5 outpatient imaging centers, 2 hospitals, and several outpatient medical practices.
RAF is proud of this history and looks forward to a bright future serving our patients and fellow clinicians.
